Man's steps are ordained by the LORD, how then can a man understand his way? – Proverbs 20:24 (NASB)

There are at times more questions than answers when it comes to obeying the Lord, that’s when we must obey what God is telling us because He is sovereign, and we must put our trust and faith in Him even if His direction doesn’t make sense.

The Lord had me recall the walls of Jericho and how He delivered Jericho to the Israelites, yet there were specific unconventional ways the city was to be taken. There were strict rules with consequences forbidding any devoted items to be taken from the city; only items the Lord specified could be taken, and a faithful woman with her family were to be spared. The walls tumbled and the victory occurred just as the Lord spoke. (Joshua 5, 6)

Who would have thought that an army, priests blowing trumpets, and the ark of the covenant marching around the city with a final shout on command would cause the walls to fall as it did? Only God could have made this happen.

Unfortunately, there was disobedience within the Israelite army when Jericho was conquered, which later caused the loss of life within the Israelite army in the next battle at Ai. After the loss, God revealed unfaithfulness as the consequences of the loss. There were items taken from Jericho that were not allowed and after discovering the individual who disobeyed God’s direction, he and his family members lost their lives. (Joshua 7)

What struck me is that one man’s disobedience cost his life and that of his family, in addition to fellow soldiers. Like Adam and Eve who disobeyed God and ate fruit from a tree in which they were told not to. Their act of disobedience affected the entire world and future generations to be born with a nature of sin. (Genesis 2:4-3:24)

God then showed me how One man came to save the world from our curse of sin, one we may not have known existed. Jesus, God in the flesh, the creator of humanity and the world knew that on our own we would not be able to overcome this sin nature (Romans 3:23, Romans 5:12). We need help, we need forgiveness, we need God’s wisdom, power, and His salvation. We can possess this through the obedience of one, Jesus. May we as His followers’ impact others with our obedience to Christ.

Heavenly Father, thank You that You created this world and us. You show us Your glory within Your laws and forgiveness through Your grace. You have made a way for us to overcome the sins of others and our sins against You. Thank You that You ordain our steps and will for us to accept and obey You as our Savior.
